First of all you must clearly mention what you are selling because this is the first thing a customer searches in your advertisement or your website. Thus you can say that the heading of the advertisement or the website is very important. Always mention what you're selling in simple and straight forward terms. The best practice is to keep the content of your website or advertisement simple but attractive and eye-catching.

You should try to “sizzle” the product as much as possible. Normally listing the product I the ad or on the website will not attract customers. For example instead of mentioning “curtains for sale” you can attract more customers by listing the same product as “beautiful curtains for your room”.

You should also determine the type of audience that would be reading your advertisement or the website. A product mend for teenagers needs to advertise in a different manner than the one mend for the older generation. Another thing to determine before writing an advertisement is whether you are going target customers who are totally new to your product or those who have some knowledge about your products and services. This is because you neither want to give very little information and on the same time you don't want to waste valuable space with unnecessary and irrelevant information. Knowing your customers gives you an idea of what exactly your advertisement or website should contain. You can also make use of technical nomenclature if you are targeting experienced customers and vice versa in case of a novice crowd. The words you use in your website or advertisements is of great importance as you need to convince the customers that you are the best source for the product or the service they are looking and why they should choose you to buy that product from. A well written advertisement is very effective in expanding your target market and boosting the sale of your business thus ultimately leading to increased profits.

In order to determine the type of audience you also need to decide the medium of advertisement. An advertisement in newspaper is different from an advertisement on a website. An advertisement in specialized newsletters might require different guidelines as compared to posting an advertisement on the web.

Last but not the least, your advertisement should contain your full contact details including your phone number, email address, website address etc. Email addresses are gaining importance these days with the growing importance of the internet and have become almost mandatory for the businesses to have one or two email addresses mentioned in their advertisements as it facilitates fast and quick communication.
