Tropical Fish Keeping

Tropical fish keeping is enjoyed by many people around the globe. The concept of aquarium keeping originated in England and Germany and quickly became a popular method of fish keeping throughout the world.

First of all a person should determine size of his aquarium. It is determined after considering various factors like available space, size, the type of fish one wants to keep, the cost of entire setup and budget to work with. A 30 gallon tank is recommended for beginners as it provides sufficient volume to store water which helps in diluting fish wastes and gives enough room for fishes to grow. One should clean the aquarium before setting it up so to remove any possible fingerprints, dust etc.

The aquarium must be placed on a robust stand to prevent the weight from shifting once the aquarium is filled with water. Various wooden, metal or acrylic stands are now available with a wide variety in stiles and looks. One should also use a cover or a hood which prevents the fishes from jumping out of the tank and also to reduce heat loss and increase the efficiency of a heater.

A thermostatically controlled water heater must be embedded inside the tank so as to maintain the desirable water temperature. There are few types of such heater available depending upon one's preference and budget. The use of an air pump is also essential as they are used with diffusers at the bottom of the tank to circulate the water by moving air bubbles in the upward direction.

Aquariums also require a gravel bottom and gravels of various size and colors can be bought from any local pet shop. Decorating an aquarium is beneficial for both fishes and humans and one must be careful in selecting the medium of decoration as not all of them are suitable for the fishes .
