Tropical Fish Care

There are various factors or determinants that influence the health and the well being of the Tropical fishes and one must be aware of all these factors while setting up an aquarium at his place. The most crucial factor is the quality of the water or the availability of proper oxygen to the fishes.

Always measure and adjust water temperature, ph, amount of oxygen dissolved, level of ammonia and nitrate and the salinity of the water as required. This can be done by installing a water quality test kit at your home. The airflow rate should be regulated at 2 liters an hour per liter of water and it should be controlled with the help of an aerator.

Abrupt adjustment of water temperature should be avoided because the optimum temperature ranges for tropical fishes are narrow and they cannot tolerate abrupt changes in temperature.

Tropical fishes should be provided with a good diet including at least 30% protein and 10% fat but the content of carbohydrates should be low. The food should also contain adequate amino acids. The feed to the fish should be appropriate depending on the number and type of fish in the aquarium for example in general terms one should feed 10g flake food to 50 adult tropical fishes but this should be done in accordance with an expert advice. There should be no excess feeding as it results in excess food floating in the tank. The food should be stored in air tight containers and placed in cold and dry areas but the food should not kept frozen for more than three months. The aquariums should have proper lighting to avoid accumulation of heat and dimmers should be used to prevent the fishes from agitating suddenly.

The aquarium should be kept covered to prevent water from getting dirty and the water in the tank should be changed after every month.
