Home TMJ Treatment

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder) often termed as TMD is a pain caused by dislocation of cartilage where the lower jaw (mandible) connects to the skull. Basically, the main function of TM Joints that can be located near the ears is to maintain coordination between lower and upper jaw i.e. it helps in moving the jaw simultaneously. Temporomandibular joint can cause sever pain and clicking sounds in the jaw that can be heard by some people.

Two major home TMJ treatments are

  1. Diet treatment
  2. Exercise

Diet treatment

Changing your diet completely can help you overcome the pain of TMJ. Below are some of the diet changes:

  • Avoid foods that contain a lot of vitamin C, iron, sugar, preservatives and yeast.
  • Eat more vegetables including soup, red meat and the food that contains more amount of saturated fat. Cut back on dairy and wheat products.
  • Cut back on salicylates.

Exercise

In addition to changing your diet, changing your environment will also relieve you form TMJ pain. Jaw and neck exercises can also be a good cure for TMJ that will help you stretch jaw muscles increasing the flexibility of your jaws. Perform such exercises in the morning in a moist or warm environment.

The above home TMJ treatments worked fine for me but I don't know if these home TMJ treatments might work for other people, suffering from TMJ pain. Many of the treatments like setting up your computer in right position, improving your body posture, doing less risky work or receiving adequate magnesium in your diet may be worth considering for people suffering from TMJ pain. Before changing your diet or starting an exercise program consult your doctor, especially if you have health problems.
